Tirumala Venkateswara Temple
The hill shrine of Sri Venkateswara at Tirumala, among the most visited places of worship anywhere in the world.
Significance
Tirumala stands on the Seshachalam hills, and the deity, Sri Venkateswara, is worshipped as a form of Vishnu. The temple has been endowed and rebuilt by successive dynasties over many centuries, and inscriptions on its walls record gifts from Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara rulers. It draws vast numbers of pilgrims through the year, and the practice of offering one's hair, of fulfilling vows here, and of the laddu given as prasadam are all closely associated with it. The temple and the pilgrimage infrastructure around it are administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.

Tirumala is less a single monument than a working pilgrimage town built around one shrine. Almost everything a visitor encounters — the queue complexes, the accommodation, the transport up the hill — exists to move very large numbers of people past the sanctum in an orderly way.
